I know, stupid question, but confused.... « Thread Started on Mar 21, 2004, 12:12am »
Hey Guys,
I am seriously confused about something, and was hoping my fellow bowlers would help me out.
Does staying behind the ball as long as you can produce more revs? OR
Does coming around the side of the ball produce more revs or does it just produce extra hook?
I am working on learning to stay behind the ball longer in my game. Any tips?
Thanks for your help on the above questions. I know they sound stupid and should be something I know. However, I am confused after being told something. thanks for your help.

Not only is that not a stupid question, it is a really hard one to answer. I have pondered it, and here is my take on it.... Staying behind the ball dosn't necessarily give you more revs, just more forward roll. Coming around the side of the ball dosn't give you more revs either, just more side roll. I have recently been coached to stay behind the ball more to cut down on entry angle and boards covered, but my rev rate has stayed the same as it was when i came around the side of it more. As to how to increase rev rate, that is done by different people in different ways. Some pop their wrist at release (Monacelli, R. Smith, Mark Roth, ME ), others get a ton of revs with powerful fingers and solid wrists (PDW, C. Barnes, Norn Duke). P.S. I may be mixing you up with somebody else, but don't you have a Sarge-Easter drill? If so, that definately takes revs off the ball because its half fingertip half conventional, and you cant rev the ball as much as true fingertip.

Well unless you are Robert Smith
Coming off from the back of the ball or more on the side will just change the roll and not increase your rev rate. I would try cupping the ball more if you are trying to add more revs to your ball. That would be about the simplest way to explain it without having some hands on instruction.

like i'm probably the last one to talk on putting rev's on the ball, but if you watch the guy's w/ the rev's you will see the wrist uncup at the release point as the elbow pushes forward. if you have some show's taped watch it frame by frame (chis barnes is a great example of this technique). cya monday nite steve

Well I guess going back to the original question is he wanting to become a power player like a Robert Smith, Brad Angelo or Rudy Revs or a game that has a straighter line to the pocket like a Walter Ray Williams, Mika Koivuniemi or Chris Barnes?
You can still increase your rev rate and stay pretty straight if the shot allows you to. Mika and Walter Ray have good rev rates for straight players.
I have no idea who the original author is so not sure what he really has in mind.
When I refered to cupping the ball for higher rev counts I did have Robert Smith in mind which is probably a bad example on my part.
